I designed and built a wooden planter for my front garden. Its made of wood, and rather than have the soil touch the wood, causing it to rot, the soil is held in cheap plastic containers (from Sainsbury's). The wood encloses the containers, so you cannot see the plastic.
Each planter holds three containers. I have 2 planters in front of my house, and made another one from my Mum.
As the containers are separate from the wooden planter, its easy to swap one container with another. So in the spring, I can swap in some spring bulbs, and then when they stop flowering, I can swap them with pre-prepare containers with annuals. Then in Autumn, I can swap again for something that is attractive during the winter.
