Sherlock Holmes is an Idiot

Perhaps calling fictional characters idiots, is itself stupid, but what the heck!

Here's a famous quote from the supposed intellectual genius :

When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
Sherlock Holmes, "The Sign of Four"

Dr. Watson came to see me yesterday, and at the crossroads, he could have taken any of the three routes. I know he didn't go straight ahead, because that road was flooded. I have eliminated the impossible, therefore what remains is the truth.

Dr. Watson spit in two, and took both the left and right paths simultaneously??? Sherlock, you are an idiot!

Perhaps he meant to say when there is only 1 possibility remaining, that must be the truth?

Well that's idiotic too. If all but 1 road was flooded, does that mean he took that road? No.

He could have walked across the fields. He could have caught a ride on a hot air balloon. Doc Brown may have appeared from the future to give him a lift (travelling to a time when the road wasn't flooded).

There are a near infinite number of possibilities, you can never reduce the count to 1.

When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, one of them must be the truth.

Not so catchy, and not in the slightest bit useful!

The first part is problematic too. Can we eliminate the possibility that he crossed one of the flooded roads? A car would need to be modified with a snorkel, (it needs air to burn fuel). How do you prove that a snorkel wasn't added, and then later removed?

Every excuse you make (e.g. there are no water stains from water entering the car), does that make it impossible, or merely improbably. Sherlock, you are an idiot. Lack of water stains make it improbable, not impossible. Scotch-Guard would prevent water stains!

But I've checked the fabric, there's no Scotch-Guard present... Yeah, a solvent was applied to remove the Scotch-Guard. Improbable, not impossible.
